Emergency Procedures at
The emergency number 911
1. First Aid Kit
Please either bring your own
or use the first aid kit provided in the Resource Box. Don’t forget to return
it. Take one on all docent trips.
2. Emergencies on the Ice Mountain Side
If an emergency happens on
the rare plant side of the mountain, check if Dr. Mark or Jo Jones are at home at the Ice Mountain Development. His house is the
large two story to the left of the swinging bridge. They
are emergency room physicians. The local rescue squad in Slanesville
has the combination for the gate into the Ice Mountain Development.
3. Emergencies on the Back Side of the
Mountain
The nearest phone is in the Bailes inn house. The next nearest phone will be either
David Hanaman’s house. David’s house is on the black top road. From
the end of the Back Side trail (the very steep, rocky trail) turn
left and walk the road away from North River Mills for about 600 feet.
The house is on the left and is a one-story ranch. There are people usually
staying there on the weekends.
Remember that a 4 wheel
drive vehicle can drive up close to the saddle on the Bailes
and Sloan Millers property (the way we hike in).
4. Rescue Locations
The nearest rescue and fire
squad is located in Slanesville, 3 miles north west of the preserve. From the Inn House proceed west
for 3 miles to the intersection with Route 29. The nearest
hospital is in Romney. Take 29 to 50 and then 50 into Romney.
5. Procedures
If a person on your trip has
a minor injury, you can suggest things that you have that may be of help, but
they should ask for them, you should not force them on the injured
person. A person with a minor injury can be walked out of the preserve and
taken, or drive themselves to the hospital if needed. Examples of such injuries
handled this way would be sprains or a cut.
In the case of a serious
injury such as a heart attack or a broken bone, the injured person should
remain in place and people sent to call for help to come to the injured person.
It is the case of the serious injury, where knowing where the closest phone is
of the most help.
